ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
December 21, 2024 I am really excited about Sunday and the sermon I will be preaching. A number of years ago, I said something similar, and it ended up being a really bad sermon—mostly in the delivery. For that reason, I am hesitant to “jinx” this Sunday’s sermon. Also, there is a part of me that doesn’t want to set expectations too high. Of course, it would be strange to send out something to the congregation that says, “This Sunday’s sermon won’t be good, but we hope you’ll come.” This is when I pause long enough to remember the angel of the Lord who said to some shepherds, “I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people” (Luke 2:10). The angel is not the source or inspiration of the good news. The angel is the one who brings or delivers the good news. The one who shares is important, but at the end of the day, it is good news because it is God’s news. God makes it good, and that is sort of freeing to one like myself who has been invited to share it. Thank you for gifting this world, Lord, with news that is good… so very good. Amen.
