ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
November 16, 2024 There are times when it appears that Jesus was in conflict with the Pharisees. However, in Luke 11, we encounter an instance where a Pharisee extended an invitation to Jesus for a meal. Jesus accepted the invitation and took a seat at the table. This event was followed by a rather intense and contentious discussion, but it is important to refrain from assuming that it held any deeper significance beyond the customary religious discourse prevalent within Judaism. It might be a poor comparison, but in my seminary years, there were instances when a group of us students would gather over a meal and engage in a rather intense debate about a specific aspect of an author we had recently read. If an outsider had been invited to join us, I believe that individual would have felt uncomfortable, perhaps even troubled by some of the passionate and over-the-top rhetoric. I was known for taking on the role of devil’s advocate, challenging someone’s thoughts on a particular topic. On the other hand, others were known for their sharp and biting sarcasm. Someone else was known for a rather over the top sigh and roll of the eyes as a way of expressing distain for an opinion that was offered. Someone else was known for a rather exaggerated sigh and a roll of the eyes as a way of expressing disdain for an opinion offered. Sometimes, a person at the table would admit a change of heart, but more often, the meals served as a necessary impetus, especially when an idea required further exploration. There are instances when our thoughts about God are adequate until real-life experiences challenge our assumptions, leading us to realize that our understanding of God falls short. Ultimately, despite our occasional criticism of one another, there was never a moment when the love we shared for each other was questioned. Even though Jesus strongly disagreed with some aspects of the Pharisaic belief, I find it difficult to imagine that his love for them was diminished even during the height of their debate. Merciful and Grace-filled God, push me where I need a little push. Embrace me when I need to feel your presence. And as you always do, love me through it all. Amen.
