ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
November 7, 2024 In recent months, I have found myself quoting and quoting again the words from the 13th chapter of John’s Gospel, where Jesus says to his disciples after washing their feet, “I give you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, so you also must love each other. This is how everyone will know that you are my disciples, when you love each other” (vs.34-35). Where did Jesus suggest we stop loving someone? And when we do not Put Love First In All Things, how are we representing Jesus? And equally important, what are we communicating to the world about our understanding of God? Throughout Christian history, there have been some extraordinary examples of people living love, but as a whole, the church is a work in progress… often scoring a C- at best, and that’s only because God grades on a curve. The love you have shown me, Merciful God, is something I will never be able to explain in words, but I hope the way I live my life provides a good and worthy testimony to your unconditional, unrelenting, and limitless love. Amen.
