ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS

God is the first actor, the first cause, or the unmoved mover. In one way or another, these rather old theological concepts are suggesting what is found in Genesis 1, “In the beginning, God…” But even more so is the idea that faith is a response to what God has and continues to do. Some might say faith is a human construct in search of a meaning and purpose, and though I do believe there is a yearning within every human being that seeks some greater connection beyond oneself, yet at the end of day, I believe love rooted in the actions of a God who first loved us. We love only because the Source of Love, the One who is the Essence of Love, acted upon creation with love. There might be those who would argue that somewhere along the development of the human species, one of our ancestors said, “You know, I am going to suggest that love might be a good thing.” Maybe… but love sort of pushes against the natural human instinct to control, serve self above others, and self-preservation at any cost. Love stands contrary to all of that, and for that reason, it sort of feels as if love must have had its origin outside of us.

Thank you for loving me, Amazing God, even before I realized how essential your love would be for my life. Thank you for a gift that I will never fully comprehend or appreciate. Amen.
