ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
August 6, 2024 In Deuteronomy 11:1, we read: “You shall love the Lord your God, therefore, and keep his charge, his decrees, his ordinances, and his commandments always.” I love God, but I don’t know if I'll ALWAYS be able to keep the divine charges, decrees, ordinances, and commandments. The word ‘always’ makes me nervous, as I don’t know if I am capable of even hitting 85%...maybe 70%—on a good day. I love my wife, but I know I’m not always a perfect husband. In fact, I’m far from it. Yet any loving relationship gives room for ‘always’ to be a work in progress, while also not allowing the language of a work in progress to become a go-to excuse. In the end, I believe that I can and will stretch my capacity to love God and find new ways of living faithfully according to the divine charges, decrees, ordinances, and commandments. Bless and encourage me, Lord God, as I strive toward the ‘always’ you deserve. Amen.
