ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
July 7, 2024 First, remember that it is a one-service Sunday today at 10:25am in the Forum. It is a combined service, with both the choir and some of the band. These are good Sundays, as they remind us that we are one church with one mission, worshipping in two different styles. In fact, the theme for tomorrow is based on the word seamless. Did you know that you can have multiple fabrics woven together seamlessly? You can also have multiple fabrics sewn together with multiple seams—seams that can pull apart. Cypress Creek Christian Church had a time in its history when there was some tension between the two styles of worship, maybe even some animosity. CCCC was not unique in this experience, but when Paul spoke of the church being one, he did not speak of having a common liturgy, music style, or even matching t-shirts. It was love that bound the church together, and since we chose to live more passionately into our vision of Putting Love First In All Things, I have seen the preference someone has for music lose its authority in regard to where we hang our unity. If someone believes music style will hold the church together in times of upheaval, that person is going to have a rude awakening. In fact, I believe the opposite might be true. If different styles of music touch the hearts of different people, bringing them into an experience of God’s love, then ultimately, these different approaches might, in fact, create more unity around the one thing that will actually create unity—love. Bring us together in the good work to which you have called us, O God, for you are the one who continues to find ways of meeting us with your love, no matter our differences or unique likes. Amen.
