ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote, “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” I don’t know about you, but there have been many finite disappointments in my life that have caused me to lose hope. It is troubling how powerful disappointment can be in our lives as it sucks the possible from any future moment, at least for a while. What did Dr. King mean about “infinite hope”? I can’t say for sure, but I believe infinite hope is something we continue to discover as we build a relationship with the One who is infinite. So often our disappointment is brought about because our capacity to see options, especially beyond disappointment, is very limited. The God I believe in sees all possibilities, and though I can feel crushed for a period of time by a momentary disappointment, God continues to cast before me new possibilities, often those I could have never previously imagined. Don’t stop finding new ways of growing in your relationship with God.

As I come alongside you in prayer, O Merciful and Generous God, I seek to find new depth to my understanding of you and my relationship with you. May this moment be only one among a multitude of life-giving connections to you. Amen.
