ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
June 11, 2024 Francis of Assisi wrote, “Pure, holy simplicity confounds all the wisdom of the world and the wisdom of the flesh.” This quote has been sitting with me for a while, especially as I think about the simple things like kindness and gentleness and trigonometry. Ok, maybe not the third one, but I wonder if we assume that great things are only achieved through the complicated. What if a handful of people committed themselves to simple acts of kindness and gentleness in this world? Or maybe we should focus that energy on our little corner of the world. The Apostle Paul reminded us in Ephesians 4 that we are to be kind to one another. I’m not suggesting anyone reading this lacks kindness or gentleness, but what is one thing you could do today to take your kindness and gentleness to the next level? And if you were able to take it to the next level today, there would be another next level for tomorrow. Start doing that, and we might just confound this world and all of its wisdom. Give me the courage, Grace-filled God, to confound this world and all its wisdom with one simple act of kindness and gentleness after another. Amen.
