ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
June 2, 2024 The author and teacher, Margaret Wheatley, wrote: Without reflection, we go blindly on our way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful. How often have unintended consequences or unforeseen implications undermined what initially appeared to be a good thing? Have you ever said something within one context only to realize later how the implications were hurtful, bigoted, disrespectful, or incredibly insensitive simply because you did not process your words beyond your original context? Oh sure, I think we all need to show some grace, especially when something new is being explored, tested, or created. At the same time, as Wheatley suggests, reflection, especially within community, is helpful in recognizing what might have been previously unforeseen. Today, in worship, we are going to reflect on some good ideas that, when carried forward, actually undermine some of the most central teachings of Jesus. Not every new idea is a good idea. Give me patience and a good community of people, Gracious God, who can help me see what I may not be able to see. Amen.
