ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
April 12, 2025 The middle section of Luke’s Gospel comes to a conclusion with the words: “After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem” (19:28). Back in the 9th chapter, we heard how Jesus was setting his face to Jerusalem. Ten chapters later, he now arrives. The side gate into Jerusalem is before Jesus, and he’s about ready for the triumphant entry on what we know as Palm Sunday. The journey to Jerusalem over the ten chapters has had less to do with the roadways on which he traveled and more to do with the revelation by which he taught. This travel section is filled with stories, parables, and miracles used to expose the reality of God’s Kingdom here on Earth. Though keep your eyes open, for what lies ahead is the most thought-provoking demonstration of the kingdom reality—the power of self-giving love to completely shift the trajectory of human history. I walk alongside you, O Lord, on my way to Jerusalem. Continue to inspire within me a yearning to walk in your way of sacrificial love. Amen.
