ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
March 18, 2025 So what do you do with a rock? In the ancient world, a pile of rocks held significance. Over the years, I’ve amassed a diverse collection of rocks, ranging from small to somewhat large. These rocks have come to me through various means, including Bible studies, worship gatherings, church camps, retreats, and even from a kind-hearted child who simply offered, “Here! I thought you might need this.” Many of those rock have words on them, though sadly I have forgotten the meaning behind some of them. On Sunday, we handed out little bags with something in them. The theme was: Awaken Curiosity. We told folks not to open them until later to create a little curiosity. Since then, many people have posted images of their rocks on social media. The rock says: Awaken! Ten years from now, I may not recall the precise circumstances surrounding my Awaken Rock, but it will remain an important part of my rock collection—serving as a reminder of significant moments in my life. In Joshua 4, the Israelites put together a pile of rocks to remember how God had acted on their behalf. It was suggested that future generations would come upon those rocks, and maybe not know the specifics, but would know that something significant had occurred in that place. For that very reason, others would sense the sacredness of the place. My memory may not be perfect, but my collection of rocks serves as a constant reminder that I am always in a holy place. After all, wherever God is, the space and everything within it is considered sacred. I need reminders! Provide me with as many reminders as you can, Lord God. I need reminders that wherever I am, the ground beneath my feet, the air I breathe, and the people I encounter are all holy. Awaken me to this conviction using whatever marker or reminder you wish. Amen.
