ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS

I don’t know how old I was when I realized it wasn’t the Eyes of March. Actually, it was last Tuesday. Just kidding, but I went many years confused by the whole thing. Even funnier was my attempt at trying to figure out why the date of Julius Caesar’s assassination was called the Eyes of March. Who was watching? Sometimes, we unexpectedly discover the truth, and we feel a bit embarrassed that we were unaware of it before. There have been instances when I’ve been singing a song, only to realize the lyrics I had been singing for quite some time were completely wrong. It can be a bit embarrassing, but I’ve learned to own it. Tomorrow, we will continue with our theme of Awaken, specifically Awaken Curiosity. I sort of wonder if some people’s curiosity is dampened by their fear of learning something new that everyone else seemed to know. This is where self-deprecating humor can be helpful. I’m not suggesting we demean ourselves. Not at all, as self-deprecating humor requires a person to have a decent sense of self-worth. I believe the ability to laugh at oneself creates space to explore with curiosity even those things that everyone else had long ago figured out. Remember, not knowing you’re wrong doesn’t make you right. I’d rather know.

Sometimes, embarrassment can turn into something quite amusing. I don’t believe you ever laugh at us, Lord, although I think there are moments when you hope we’ll laugh with you. As human beings, we can be quite amusing creatures. Amen.
