ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS March 5, 2023 In Exodus 25, the Lord God says to Moses:
“Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them. Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you” (vs.8-9).
Years ago, a wonderful Rabbi and I were talking about the Book of Exodus, and though he spoke with pride about the beautiful Synagogue he served, he pointed out something I had never noticed about the passage. The Rabbi noted that though God invited the people to create a structure in which to worship, God did not say the divine nature would reside inside the sanctuary. It says, "so I can be present among them." Buildings can be helpful in the life and ministry of the church, but God is among the people. And I must believe it is not exclusively when the people are inside the building. How is God present to you outside the walls of the church building?
As I look into the eyes of my sisters and brothers in the faith, I see the reflection of your presence, O Gracious God. Amen.
