ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
March 1, 2025 I went to write today’s Etching, and the header I put was February 29, 2025. I’m pretty sure it is not a leap year. It is funny how we fall into habits; something automatically happens. While we often understand the reasons behind what we’ve done, it can cause some problems. Mindfulness and attentiveness are of utmost importance for those of us who strive to be witnesses to the goodness and grace of God. I’m not talking about a silly mistake on the date or even the excusable error we all make on a pretty regular basis. There is a necessary mindfulness and attentiveness that begins, in my opinion, with regular centering prayer. God knows that my mood is different, a bit more positive and compassionate, with healthy responses when I have started the morning with some centering prayer. Being able to control unhealthy reactions, often born of exhaustion, insecurity, or some unresolved anger, is what mindfulness and attentiveness seek to do. How did you start your morning? Even if you are reading this and it is the middle of the afternoon, don’t worry. It is never too late to pause, to look, be reminded of God’s presence in every moment, and then to seek to be more mindful and attentive to that presence in every moment that is to follow. I pause and breathe you in, O Spirit of Life and Peace and Compassion. Prepare the eyes of my spirit so I might name you; embrace you; and be vigilant when it comes to being open to your guidance. Amen.
