My name is Bruce Frogge, and I presently live in Naples, Florida, with my wife, Donna, and my son, Zachariah. We moved to Naples in the fall of 2006 to help relaunch a congregation that had resigned itself to a mission of self-preservation and a passionate vision for demise. What convinced me to leave a much larger church for a new challenge was the people who remained committed to a Disciples of Christ presence in Naples. They were and continue to be an amazing group of people who are willing to discern God’s leading even when it moves them toward the edge of comfort.
I serve First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) here in Naples, and many of our denominational churches have found it difficult to transition from the 1950’s model of doing church. What we did 60+ years ago was successful, but by the 1960‘s it was beginning to lose its effectiveness. We continued to plug along resting on previous success and enjoying what felt comfortable. First Christian Church of Naples struggled with those same issues, but with the added uniqueness of a neighborhood which has a declining population of full time residents (we are surrounded by snowbirds and vacationers). Many churches in the area cater to the snowbird population, but we made the conscious decision to be a year-around church that ministers to people who really work in this area.
